Prometaphase is initiated as the nuclear membrane surrounding the nucleus abruptly disappears. This allows the fibres of the growing spindle to penetrate in amongst the chromosomes, which immediately respond by starting to move around irregularly. The spindle now consists of two star-shaped arrays of fibres each focussed upon a "spindle pole".
